How to stream with Audio Hijack

Updated

This guide connects Audio Hijack to your Evenings station so you can broadcast from a Mac over RTMP.

Audio Hijack is a paid Mac app from Rogue Amoeba. You build a session by wiring blocks together (an app, a mic, meters, effects, an output), so you can see exactly where your audio is going. It's a good fit if you're on a Mac and want that view without learning a full streaming suite. If you'd rather use something free, OBS works over RTMP on Windows, macOS and Linux, and BUTT works over Icecast. You can also go live from your browser with nothing to install.

1. Install Audio Hijack

Download Audio Hijack from rogueamoeba.com/audiohijack. Rogue Amoeba lists the macOS versions each release supports on that page, with older versions available for older Macs. If macOS asks for permission to capture audio the first time you run it, allow it.

Without a license, Audio Hijack runs in trial mode and overlays noise on captured audio after a set time (10 minutes when we took these screenshots). That's fine for a test run, but buy a license before a real show.

Open the session list and click New Session at the bottom left.

2. Start a Live Stream session

In the Template Chooser, pick Live Stream. A new session window called Live Stream opens.

3. Choose your sources

The template starts with an Application block and an Input Device block, each with a meter, both feeding the Live Stream block.

  • Click the Application block and pick the app you're playing from, such as Spotify, Music or Chrome.
  • If you're talking on air, click Input Device and pick your mic or audio interface. If you aren't, select the Input Device and Peak/RMS blocks and delete them.

4. Connect Audio Hijack to Evenings

On Evenings, click Go Live at the top right of your dashboard. Under "…or with Streaming Software" you'll find your Stream Url and Stream Key, each with a Copy button.

In Audio Hijack, click the Live Stream block to open its settings, and fill in:

  • Server URL: rtmp://s2.evenings.co/evenings
  • Key: your stream key, pasted with the Copy button on the Go Live page

Use the Copy button rather than selecting the key by hand, so no stray space comes with it. Your stream key works like a password: anyone who has it can broadcast to your station.

5. Go live

Close the block's settings and click Run at the bottom left of the session window.

The Live Stream block shows Connecting and then starts counting. On Evenings, your station's name at the top left of the dashboard now shows LIVE and a listener count. Click it to open the player and hear what your listeners hear.

Only one connection can use your stream key at a time. While Audio Hijack is live, a second copy of OBS or Audio Hijack can't connect with the same key. Going live from the browser or BUTT does take over, though: that connection wins and Audio Hijack gets disconnected.

6. Stop

Click Stop at the bottom left of the session window when your show is over.

Every broadcast is recorded, and the recording shows up in your Library as a track after you stop. If your connection drops partway through, that part is saved on its own, and when you click Run again we begin a new recording.

Next

With your setup working, schedule your next live show so it's on your calendar before you go on air. If Audio Hijack won't connect, check Troubleshooting first, then email contact@evenings.email with your station name and a screenshot of the Live Stream block's settings (with the key hidden). We'll take it from there with you.
