How to stream internet radio with BUTT

This guide will get you set up broadcasting with one of our favorite free broadcasting tools, BUTT.

Butt (Broadcast Using This Tool) is a pretty useful tool and a genuinely good piece of software. Often tools in the internet radio world are written by individual developers. From what we can tell, Butt is one of those — written, maintained, and supported by Daniel Nöthen. Shoutout Daniel Nöthen.

We've talked to lots of stations that use Butt to broadcast to their pages, and we've never been able to support them until now. Here's how you can use Butt to stream to Evenings.

Install Butt

Download Butt from danielnoethen.de/butt. You may need to give it permission to use your microphone or audio input.

Add Evenings as a server

Open Butt, click Settings, and under Server Settings click Add Server. Fill it in like this:

• Name: whatever you want
• Type: Icecast
• Address: s2.evenings.co
• Port: 8001
• Password: this can be anything
• Icecast mountpoint: your Stream Key from Evenings
• Icecast user: evenings

You'll find your Stream Key on the Go Live page of your Evenings dashboard.

Click Save and you're connected to Evenings.

What these Icecast fields mean

If you've used Icecast before, a couple of these settings might seem odd but it is just how we wrote our Icecast support to mirror our RTMP connections.

• Address and Port: our streaming server, s2.evenings.co, listening for Icecast connections on port 8001. Every station streams here.
• Icecast mountpoint: normally the path your stream lives at on an Icecast server. We use it to carry your stream key instead — that's how we know the stream is yours.
• Icecast user and password: your stream key handles authentication, so these just need to be filled in to keep Butt happy.

Your stream key does all the authentication work here, so this setup is just as secure as a username and password.

Go live

Back in the main window, click the Play button to connect and start broadcasting. Your stream will appear live on your Library page on Evenings — select "View Player" to listen in.

When you're done, click Stop. The broadcast is automatically saved to your Library like every other Evenings stream.
