How to stream with VirtualDJ to an Icecast server

Updated

This guide sets up VirtualDJ's Radio Server broadcasting so your mix goes straight to your Evenings station over Icecast, with no separate encoder.

VirtualDJ is DJ software for Windows and macOS by Atomix Productions. Before you start, check your license: VirtualDJ's manual says broadcasting to a radio server needs a Pro Infinity or Pro Monthly license. If you're on the free version, send your mix to Evenings through BUTT instead, using the steps in How to live stream a DJ set from Serato or rekordbox to get VirtualDJ's audio into it.

1. Copy your stream key

On Evenings, click Go Live at the top right of your dashboard and use the Copy button next to Stream Key.

2. Open the broadcast settings

In VirtualDJ, click the settings button at the top of the window and open Broadcast. Of the options there, choose Radio Server, which broadcasts to an internet radio server like ours. The others are for streaming to social platforms, streaming straight from your computer, and VirtualDJ's podcast hosting.

3. Fill in the server

Set the protocol to Icecast, then fill in the fields with these values. The exact field names vary a little between VirtualDJ versions.

FieldValue
Server addresss2.evenings.co
Port8001
Mount pointyour stream key
Loginevenings
Passwordany placeholder, such as x

We don't check the login or password; your stream key in the mount point is what tells us the broadcast is yours. The connection to port 8001 isn't encrypted, so keep real passwords out of these fields.

With Icecast, VirtualDJ streams in Ogg, which we accept, so pick the highest quality it offers. We convert every broadcast to a 160 kbps MP3 for listeners and record it as a 192 kbps MP3, so the better it sounds going in, the better it sounds on air and in your recording.

VirtualDJ's broadcast page also mentions forwarding port 8000 on your router. That only applies when you host a server yourself, so you can skip it.

4. Go live

Click START BROADCAST.

On Evenings, your station's name at the top left of the dashboard now shows LIVE and a listener count. Click it to open the player and hear what your listeners hear.

Next time, you can use the BCAST button in the mixer's master section, which starts broadcasting with the last settings you used.

Only one connection can use your stream key at a time. If you go live from the browser or another Icecast app with the same key, the newer connection wins and VirtualDJ gets disconnected.

5. Stop

Click the BCAST button when your set is over.

Every broadcast is recorded, and the recording shows up in your Library as a track after you stop. If your connection drops partway through, that part is saved on its own, and when you connect again we begin a new recording.

Next

Put your next set on the calendar so listeners know when to tune in: schedule a live broadcast. If VirtualDJ won't connect, check that the server is exactly s2.evenings.co on port 8001 and that the mount point is your stream key, then see Troubleshooting. If you're still stuck, email contact@evenings.email with your station name, your VirtualDJ version and a screenshot of your Radio Server settings (with the key hidden), and we'll work through it with you.
